Program of environmental awareness hiking routes through periurban areas in the province of Cuenca
When we talk about damaging the environment and the many problems that human activities cause in it, things that come to our minds include factories polluting the air and water, machines cutting down hectares of trees, overloaded rubbish landfills or the famous climate change. We usually view environmental damage as something that is far away, as if solutions to environmental problems are too big and beyond our capabilities. But caring for the environment and sustainable development start with each of us, with everything we do in our daily lives.
The key is to realize this, and communication, education and the promotion of scientific culture are essential tools in this process. The Provincial Office of Sustainable Development of the Regional Government of Castilla-La Mancha (JCCM), within the Environmental Education Strategy of Castilla-La Mancha 2030, has therefore started the Environmental Education Program “Discover your environment”, which aims to bring to the educational community the discovery and knowledge of our closest environment, the one we find in the vicinity of urban areas.
The sessions of “Discover your environment”, which are guided by 2 Environmental Education instructors and last between 4 and 5 hours, consist of conducting environmental awareness hiking routes made up of different workshops and games, thus the students of the participating educational centers become authentic naturalists. During the hiking routes, the participants design and develop a field notebook that will later be very useful for solving a funny gymkhana of questions and answers. In addition, whenever possible, the hiking routes have the interesting participation of the environmental agents working in each area.
The Environmental Education Program “Discover your environment” is developed between 26th April and 22nd June 2021 for educational centers in the municipalities of Tarancón, Quintanar del Rey, Landete, Carboneras de Guadazaón, Cañete, Priego and Cuenca, in the province of Cuenca, and it is addressed to students in the courses corresponding to the last cycle of primary education (5º and 6º) and the first cycle of secondary education (1º and 2º).
